TH Bingen founds new endowed professorship "Plastics and Rubber Technology"

05.12.2022

On 11.11. the first meeting of the steering committee for the establishment of a new endowed professorship "Plastics and Rubber Technology" took place at the TH Bingen. Representatives of the industrial companies involved and the TH Bingen discussed the concept of the endowed professorship and the structure of the courses together.

“Well-trained young people are the future of our industry, and this applies in particular to companies in the plastics industry. Within a radius of 80 km around Bingen there are 50 companies that are active in plastics processing. These companies employ more than 10,000 people and need 10 to 20 more engineers every year. The new range of courses in plastics and rubber technology at the TH Bingen addresses exactly this need and is a unique opportunity for our region. Gerald Hauf (Managing Director of Polymer Holding GmbH).

"With the new endowed professorship, the TH Bingen will have another attractive subject that will work closely with the industrial companies in the region. We are very proud that, together with the regional companies, but also with our ministry and our sponsors, we can expand our teaching and research profile in a future-oriented manner”, says the Dean of the department, Prof. Christian Baier-Welt.

The new endowed professorship is currently being financed for eight years. In principle, a continuation is possible. The necessary funds are provided by several industrial companies, the Sparkasse Rhein-Nahe, the Bürkle Foundation and the Ministry of Science and Health Rhineland-Palatinate (MWG), for which the Technical University of Bingen is very grateful.

The specialization "Plastics and Rubber Technology" starts with a specialization in mechanical engineering from the summer semester 2023. From 2025 an independent bachelor's degree and at a later date a consecutive master's degree are planned. The students should receive scholarships from the companies involved and be extensively supported during their studies - in particular through internships, practical phases and final theses in the company.

The steering committee is made up as follows: Bingen University of Applied Sciences, Polymer-Holding GmbH, Sparkasse Rhein-Nahe district of Bad Kreuznach, SIMONA AG, Ministry of Science and Health, Bürkle Foundation, Bito Lagertechnik Bittmann GmbH, Allit AG, Freudenberg SE, Schlagt GmbH & Co.
